We
welcome you to our website and invite you to learn more about the benefits of
genetic testing to reduce your risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Our
goal is to educate women about a gene mutation which substantially increases their
risk of breast or ovarian cancer. However, we want to do more than just educate
you about this gene mutation. We want to encourage you to seek genetic counseling
so you can decide whether genetic testing is right for you. Our mission is to
support education and genetic screening of women around the world so we can break
the cycle of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer!
Our organization was
created because one of the founding members was diagnosed with breast cancer at
age 47. After her diagnosis, she learned that she carried the BRCA 1 mutation
which gave her a 33-50% risk of developing breast cancer by age 50. She only wishes
that someone had educated her about genetic testing so she could have taken preventive
measures to reduce her risk. The information about her genetic makeup became even
more compelling because she has two sisters. Armed with this information, her
sisters could find out if they were carriers also and take proactive measures,
if necessary. The story started with one sister and her husband but REACH is the
combined effort and love of three sisters who want to spread the word so they
might save lives.
Our organization is for this generation and all that
follows in its footsteps. We can give a gift of a longer life to someone who carries
this mutation --- a gift that we hope can be passed down to other generations.
